TV Review: Happy Endings - "Secrets and Limos"

Season 2 - Episode 4
E4 (UK)

Of all the ensemble sitcoms that have appeared since the end of Friends, Happy Endings is the one (along with, I suppose How I Met Your Mother - which I see as a slightly different concept) that looks like it could have the legs to not only go for a good long time, but also stay consistently funny throughout.

Now solidly into its second season, Happy Endings is going from strength to strength. This is a show that found its feet very early on, and has rarely dropped a beat since. This episode has a very funny storyline involving Max and Brad, when Max manages to befriend Brad's dour boss thanks to his limo. The storyline is funny, and the pay off even funnier. Max and Brad are a good pairing, they play off each other well and it's nice to see them have a plot together.

Of the other main plots, Jane interferes in Penny's increasingly neurotic life in order to make her dreams come true. There's some good laughs, and it's actually pretty heartwarming. Penny is possibly my favourite character in the show so far - her eccentricity is delightfully sweet - and it's a pleasure to see her hijinks every week. The defacto C-plot of the episode is Dave reluctantly introducing his new girlfriend to the gang. She's an absolute bitch, but she's hot, so it balances out. This thread is mainly about Dave and Alex's relationship continuing to evolve as they become freinds again. As is often the case with those two, it's the weakest part of the episode, but still has some nice moments.

Happy Endings has continued to be a solid, funny show, and it's getting better and better. Dave and Alex could do with something to put a shine on their characters, but other than that, everything is ticking along really nicely.
