TV Review: House of Lies - "Gods of Dangerous Financial Instruments"

Season 1 - Episode 1
Showtime (US)

A black comedy with Don Cheadle playing a slick management consultant. Full on nudity within the first three seconds (sadly not the show's second billed star Kirstin Bell - although it was the pleasantly supple Dawn Olivieri along with Cheadle) and razor sharp dialogue throughout. This is definitely Showtime at its best, and from the looks of this pilot, House of Lies is going to be a keeper.

The episode sets the scene, these guys are sharks, and they'll stop at nothing to get the job done, no matter how morally wrong things are. It's a nice concept, and while lead characters being bastards is a popular trait just now this show looks like it's going to be taking things a step further. Cheadle's character, Marty, sleeps with his ex wife in the first scene, passes a stripper off as his wife in a business meeting, and after initially standing up for his son's wishes (his 9 year old transvestite son I have to add) he changes his mind when he sees a possibility to get his leg over! Bell's Jeannie looks like she's going to be a bit of a vixen - fantastic - and Marty's dad, played by the excellent Glynn Turman, could well be the glue that holds the entire series together.

House of Lies has started off exceptionally well. In fact it's been a long time since I've seen a comedy pilot this good. I just really hope it can continue.

**** 1/2
