TV Review: The Middle - "Halloween II"

Season 3 - Episode 7
Sky 1 (UK)

The Middle's second shot at a Halloween episode is another charming slice of mid-American family comedy with heart. The episode sees Sue deciding that its time to grow up - and rather ridiculously goes to Mike for advice. Mike, as ever, doesn't really know how to handle things, and finds himself wondering exactly how comfortable he is with his little girl growing up.

Before Sue grows up though - and finally shows how stunning a young lady Eden Sher actually is - her Halloween costume, a giant anamorphic dice, is the most adorable thing I've ever seen. Add to that, her sheer excitement at being driven to the party in the back of a pickup truck, Sue is fast becoming the best thing about this show. Elsewhere, Frankie takes Brick and his (almost) equally socially awkward friends out trick or treating and finds out exactly how bitchy people can be, and Axl and his friends' trick or treating scam is interrupted when they stop and do the right thing for a change - a stark example of the heart this show has that I'm always banging on about.

"Halloween II" isn't the strongest episode The Middle has ever produced, but it is a warm, funny episode with some real growth for all the characters (apart from Brick again - who they seem to have run out of ideas for). The Middle has gone from a casual watch, to somerthing I don't want to miss, which tells you a lot about everything about the series.

*** 1/2
